Implementing IoT use cases with sensors and actuators

Creative makers and the engineering community come together to adopt and extend ideas put forth in this hands on exploratory course. A stepwise approach is taken while assembling embedded hardware to build a IoT network with sensors and actuators controlled by low powered (milliwatt) computing nodes.

Embedded computing use cases include:

  • Health functions (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate)
  • Entertainment (storage and control of entertainment media)
  • Logistics transport (IVI, auto control, public transportation)
  • Resource management (water and energy consumption abatement)
  • Physical security (entry control, heating, alarm systems)
  • Malicious activity detection (IoT transport filtering)
  • Applied agriculture (drone control, water distribution)
  • Retail support (customer loyalty, point of sales)
  • Civic infrastructure (urban traffic and metering)
  • Nighttime safety (light and movement detection)

Analysis of IoT designs and implementations

As analysts, we consider how embedded computers manage sensors and actuators in real world scenarios. We examine interfaces to legacy telecommunications and cloud technology while using specialized IoT platform hardware to construct a Internet of Things and Physical Web to cover as many use cases in time for final discussion.
